One sling, five smooth stones and a king size faith

David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands."
1 Samuel 17:45-47

Dear Father,
I read about a shepherd boy, challenged by a giant warrior who is insulting you and trash-talking your people. Sure, I can see why everybody was so impressed by this XXL Philistine with his big mouth and arrogant attitude! But I can also understand why David couldn’t stand Goliath's slander anymore and why he decided to fight this colossal opponent.
But before David was allowed to take on this enemy, he first had to listen to the lectures of his angry brother Eliab who told him to mind his own business - even accusing him of neglecting his shepherd's duties, only to watch the battle. How nice it is to have a supportive brother like that! David also had to convince King Saul that he was a capable fighter, politely turning down his majesty’s oversized armour, bronze helmet and sword.
Thank you for the example of this courageous shepherd boy who wasn’t afraid to approach a mighty champion, only armed with a sling, five smooth stones and a king size faith. Thank you for giving David some training sessions with lions and bears, so that he was courageous and confident enough to take on this big-mouthed barbarian and quick and clever enough to outsmart and defeat him!
Lord, you know about all the small, bigger and giant problems your children are facing today. Compared to David’s problems, our difficulties maybe seem less challenging. Still, we ask you to give us the right attitude, the right weapons and some of David's king size faith to come out of this battle as the victors we already are. Not in our own strength, but in the powerful name of the Son of David, the brave Conqueror of sin and evil, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
