Pride comes before the Fall

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

Dear Father
Your Word is the truth! Your enemy skillfully twists your words and he's always trying to distort your perfect image. This is the trick he plays on us - vulnerable human beings - from the very beginning of our existence. Oh Lord, why are we still so naive? We all should know better by now! Why do we break your heart again and again? Why do we deceive ourselves by believing that 'one little sin' will not really harm us? Our first sinful bite may initially taste delicious but the after-taste is always disgusting and sickening!
It was your enemy's pride that caused him to revolt. His pride came before the Fall and our pride also causes us to fall into temptation. We shouldn't listen to the deceiver, the father of lies, the fallen angel who is only capable of imitating your creative power by perverting all good things that you gave to us! Yes, the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom. And after we foolishly take a bite of forbidden fruit we again experience how bitter the taste of sin and guilt is. That is the kind of knowledge we all can do without!
Father, thank you for the second Adam, our Lord Jesus Christ. Today I want to repeat the words of the prayer that he taught us: 'Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one!' Help us to only put our faith in your living Word, help us to resist temptation, help us to flee from sin before the deceiver brings us under his spell. Thank you for giving us a way back to your Father's heart. Thank you for our Redeemer!
